Story Summary:
On the cold, dry, grey edge of a fin-de-siècle Toronto, a story of substance abuse, codependent toxic relationships, and antisocial violence unfolds amid the roar of cheap motels and underground rock music.
The protagonist, Jack, is a punk bassist drowning in nihilism and drug-induced hallucinations. For a long time, the trauma of a broken family and his own ingrained cowardice have been twisted into a morbid projection onto a young girl named Kathie.
Once a victim of school bullying, Kathie, after experiencing family upheaval and utter despair, comes to see Jack—who had cruelly killed her pet—as her only emotional anchor. She displays a blind submission and a self-destructive streak.
In the suffocating closeness of a cheap motel, the two forge a toxic symbiosis laced with choke marks, debts of guilt, and absolute control.
But fate's coin finally lands heads down. Amid the chaotic thoughts woven by LSD and cocaine, Jack and his accomplice George carry out a brutal lynching in a wilderness thicket, unleashing their pent-up sadism with a series of ugly, bloody punches.
